Grapefruit are for breakfast and breakfast only. That’s what I thought until I met the love of my life. He taught me that grapefruit are a refreshing snack to be enjoyed any time of day. They are amazing when sliced and eaten after a heavy meal. I love how they have a way of cleaning the palate so you don’t end up feeling so weighed down. Tony also tuned me in to the wonder that is fruit with chile. If you’ve never tried spicy grapefruit, let me tell you, it really should be on your list. There’s something about the acidic and sweet fruit paired up with earthy dried chile. It’s amazing– and simple– and healthy, even!
Now that that’s out of the way, let me just blow your mind a little bit more.
Broiled grapefruit. (Side Note: Is it grapefruit or grapefruits? Both feel weird to say! What do you think?) Yes, this tangy fruit can, and should be, cooked. The broiling brings out a different layer of flavor that I’ve never gotten from a grapefruit before. It’s kind of like a caramelized bitterness, but in a really subtle and interesting way.
And don’t let the simplicity of this recipe fool you. (Hello, 3 ingredients and 10 minutes!) It’s a flavor party and you’re invited. There’s also this wonderful phenomenon that happens with broiled grapefruit where the top is nice and warm while the inside is still a little cool. It’s a lovely change of pace that dresses up a plain old grapefruit perfectly.
Too little time? Try this hack! Don’t have any spicy fruit seasoning and no time to make a trek to the store? Simply mix up ¾ teaspoon of ground cayenne with ¼ teaspoon of salt. Sprinkle that onto your broiled grapefruit and squirt with a little bit of fresh lime juice. That’ll do the trick! Between you and me, though, it is well worth it to buy the fruit seasoning if you can. It tastes great and you can put it on cucumbers as well as fruit. Soooo gooooood….

Chile-Lime Broiled Grapefruit Recipe

This Chile-Lime Broiled Grapefruit recipe takes this fruit places it’s never been before. Sweet, bitter, tangy, and spicy. It hits all the flavor sweet spots. Delicious!
- 2 grapefruit, chilled
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon spicy fruit seasoning (like Tajin)
- Preheat the broiler. Line a baking sheet or the broiler pan with foil.
- Cut the 2 grapefruit in half along the equator. If they do not sit well, cut a small slice off of the bottom so that they will stand on their own.
- Using a small knife, cut around each of the segments of the fruit to loosen them. Sprinkle the tops of the grapefruit with sugar, about 1 tablespoon for each grapefruit half.
- Place on the foil lined pan and broil the grapefruit for 3-5 minutes, or until the sugar bubbles and the edges brown slightly.
- Allow the grapefruit to cool for at least 5 minutes, then sprinkle with the spicy fruit seasoning (about ¼ teaspoon for each), and dig in!
